Overview
Regensburg is an ancient medieval city, the history of which dates back more than 1800 years. This is a city where the stones remember the footsteps of the iron legions of Rome, the fanatical aspiration of the Crusaders, gathered here to go liberating Jerusalem, the French guards greeting Napoleon ...
St. Peter's Cathedral, located in the heart of the city, is the architectural dominant of the city and is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Bavaria. Stained-glass windows of the XIV century are preserved, in the covered galleries along the sides of the building there are two ancient Romanesque chapels: All Saints and St. Stefan, as well as frescoes of the XV century. In the treasury of the cathedral, located in the old Episcopal Palace, jewelery and textiles of the 11th-20th centuries are kept.
Another attraction of Regensburg is the 300-meter-high Stone Bridge. The first stone bridge is so long. In the Middle Ages it was considered a miracle of the building art and for 800 years was the only bridge in the Regensburg through the Danube. It is the oldest bridge, preserved on the territory of Germany. From here an amazing view of the city opens! Next to the Stone Bridge is the famous Historic Sausage Cuisine, which appeared here in the early 12th century, and is said to have served as a dining room for the bridge builders.
The old chapel of the Blessed Virgin does not seem to be very noticeable, but inside it is a magnificent rococo hall - a real work of art of the 18th century. And in the side-chapel of the church there is a miraculous icon, written, according to some sources, personally by the Evangelist Luke. At least, the debate about the time of writing the icon does not abate so far.
Regensburg is the place where history was founded. At least, European. It was here, in the building of the Old Town Hall, that the Reichstag of the Holy Roman Empire was located for more than a hundred years, its rulers were crowned here and important international agreements were signed that somehow influenced the destinies of millions of people. In a word, the history in Regensburg is met at every step. Since 2006, the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
