Monsanto is one of the most unique towns in the world. Outside of Portuguese borders, it's famous with pictures of its unique structures, where huge boulders can be foundation, walls and even roofs of houses. Also there is an old castle of Templars and many other old buildings. The name of town is translated as “Saint Mountain” (Mons Sanctus). The seen in Monsanto impresses each guest. But the more surprising is that between the granites many houses are built, where absolutely modern Portugueses live their calm lives. You can see many beautiful landscapes at different angles of the hill, which are worth staying in that fabulous place for hours. Researchers think that the first residences here appeared in the 12th century, but natives are sure it was earlier. People used all opportunities of the terrain having built their houses between huge boulders. They used all available area and materials given by nature in form of stones. A century ago it was already hard to differentiate where the creation of nature finished and from where the creation of human started. The other specification of this town is the strange and chaotic location of roads, streets and; a steep rise unexpectedly goes into a descent, but also they’re full of turns. This town is very clean, the natives keep it so.
